How can I make my home or lifestyle more sustainable?
By choosing a low carbon, energy efficient development, residents are already taking action to tackle the climate emergency and helping Manchester achieve its carbon cutting targets.
And if you choose to, you can take more steps towards a low carbon life.
All homes are electric, so you could choose a renewable energy provider and sign up to clean, green power.
And by keeping an eye on the appliances and systems installed in your home to check they are running to their maximum energy efficiency, you can use less too.
We’ve looked at ways we can support active and sustainable travel, by linking to great projects like the Mobility Hub at Ancoats Green. And there are EV charging spots for rent where there is car parking provided, so if you need to drive, there are green options as well.
For more recommendations on how to be more sustainable and achieve net zero living, our homeowners guide coming soon.
How much will it be to rent?
There is a blend of great value high quality homes, with a minimum 20 per cent available at the Manchester Living Rent.
We’re as invested in you staying with us as you are, so we will be totally transparent about your rental agreement. That means clear communication, no sudden increases and fair market-tested rents from day one and for the long term.
What is THIS CITY?
THIS CITY is a new kind of housing company. We plan, finance and build homes in the communities that they are designed for.
THIS CITY was established in 2021with a mission to help meet the demand for high quality, low-carbon rental housing, and to do that with ‘a Manchester accent’.
Sustainability is the cornerstone of everything we do. Our homes have had sustainability designed in from day one, from the building fabric to how it operates and the practical features inside.
Our strategy looks to the long term by designing community-focused developments that foster human connection and strengthen existing communities. And whilst actively supporting inclusivity and diversity through the variety of rental choices available, we’re working to help new communities flourish.
Who owns and supports THIS CITY?
THIS CITY is backed and wholly owned by Manchester City Council. So residents are in safe hands and can feel good knowing that some of the rent paid goes to fund other projects that make a difference, like more homes, better public spaces and services.
In relation to the No. 1 Ancoats Green development, there are other grant funding partners working to bring forward improvements for the area. This includes the transformation of Ancoats Green and the Ancoats Mobility Hub project, supported by Homes England, Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), Northern Group and HBD. More information can be found at Ancoats | Manchester City Council.
THIS CITY are actively seeking like-minded investors with aligned vision and values for the next phases of development.
What are you building?
Our ambition is to build 500+ homes a year across Manchester. In our first development, No.1 Ancoats Green, we are building a combination of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments and 3 and 4 bedroom townhouses available for rent and designed to appeal to a broad range of different people’s housing needs.
The blend of apartments and houses will flex to meet the needs of the areas we’re bringing forward for development. So the mix, number of bedrooms and configurations can be designed with the prospective residents in mind.
Where are the developments?
Our first development is No. 1 Ancoats Green, set in the newly transformed Ancoats Green park.
The address is Alabaster House, #1 Ancoats Green, Manchester, M4 6NG.
The next sites to be developed will be in the neighbourhoods of Monsall and Belle Vue. Further details can be found on the Locations page.
Why is it different to other types of renting?
Because we’re backed by Manchester City Council, some of the rent you pay goes to fund more services, including more homes and public spaces. So every resident is making a difference just by living in one of our homes.
We believe that places for rent can be a forever home, so our design and build philosophy focuses on creating generous low carbon living spaces with energy efficient features that keep costs down.
Our homes are designed to help residents secure long term, stable housing. We’re doing this by taking a modern approach to the rental market and applying Mancunian values to how and why they are financed, built and managed.
We also strive to bring the Mancunian spirit to what we do – by designing community focused developments that foster human connection and strengthen existing communities.
Construction with a conscience
Sustainably built, consciously developed
Our homes have had sustainability designed in from day one, from the building fabric to how it operates and the practical features inside. So you can be confident that how you live will be planet-friendly now and in the future.
For example, on No1 Ancoats Green we’ve hit current embodied carbon targets for all apartments and achieved 2030 targets with our Townhouse design.
Hot water is warmed by an air source heat pump, a super-efficient way of extracting heat energy from the air outside.
And all our homes are electric only – so you can choose a 100% renewable energy provider and live a net zero life by making a few simple choices.
